20:16 "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

The first ones may refer to those who believed in Jesus and followed Jesus early on.  

“When evening came” means in the last days when Jesus is coming. Those who believe in Jesus, repent, and turn away from evil at that very moment will be the last ones. They will receive the same reward. What does that mean? 

Believing in Jesus, repenting, and serving are not about who came first or who came later. The purity and strength of faith is the key. In other words, those who believe first don’t necessarily have a good faith. Those who believe later may have a purer faith. If those who believed earlier complain: "I have done a lot," then they become the last. 

Here we can see that what matters is not how long or how early you believe in Jesus. The key is whether you repent quickly and thoroughly, and whether your faith is strong enough. This story is very important that we must not forget: those who came first may end up being the last.
