The Demand for a Sign
16:1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
16:4 Jesus replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.
Jonah was swallowed by a fish and came out of its mouth three days later, which is a metaphor for Jesus being crucified and resurrected in three days.
Jesus meant that there would be no other signs except for the sign of his resurrection.
The people of that time couldn’t bear any other signs, so Jesus said, "none will be given it except the sign of Jonah."This was a metaphor for His resurrection in three days.
What Jesus meant was, "You will see it when the time comes".
faith based solely on miracles and wonders is fleeting and fragile.
Many people say, "Pastor, show me a miracle, then I will believe."
But even if you show them a miracle, they may still think it's some sort of magic.
Just like when Jesus healed others, people accused him: "You are possessed, you are blaspheming against God."
That's how they slandered Jesus.
Therefore, faith based on miracles and wonders is fleeting and fragile, while faith based on love and wisdom is strong and lasting.
So we should cultivate loving-kindness and wisdom, so that our faith will be strong.
